Questions & answers
This section covers potential questions you may have.
Why have we recommended individual tickets over the JR Pass?
Following the 2023 price hike, a 7-day JR Pass costs roughly $540. Your specific Tokyo-Kyoto loop only totals ~$315. By booking individual Shinkansen tickets, you’ll be saving $225 per person, which could be reallocated to your private experiences.
How are will you handle your luggage during city transfers?
To avoid navigating crowded bullet trains with heavy bags, we've suggested the Yamato 'Takkyubin' service. Your luggage would be picked up from your Tokyo hotel and would be waiting in your Kyoto room the next morning for roughly $20 per bag, allowing for a "hands-free" travel day.
Why should you book the Tsukiji Market tour for 7:00 in the morning?
By 9:00, the market becomes saturated with large tour groups. A 7 o’clock start ensures you see the vendors at their peak and secures your seat at top-tier sushi counters like Sushi Dai before the 2-hour wait times begin.
Why does Half Board not seem worth it?
The resort charges an extra $115 per night for dinner. In a culinary capital like Kyoto, this is a very high budget for two. Skipping it gives you the freedom to explore world-class local izakayas and Michelin-rated ramen at much better prices.
