Heathrow to Central London: Best Transport Options for Every Budget
If you are landing at Heathrow Airport, you have chosen the best airport, because getting into Central London is very easy. However, choosing the right transfer depends on your budget and time.
We break down the most convenient ways to get into the city, from cheapest to most expensive, so you can choose what actually suits your trip. And here’s the thing, the most expensive option isn’t always the fastest.
Piccadilly Line
This is the most convenient option for budget travellers. The Piccadilly Line is a standard London Underground route with multiple central stops, including Hyde Park Corner, Leicester Square, and Covent Garden.
The journey from Heathrow Airport to central London costs around £5.60 and takes just under an hour, which is honestly great value for an airport transfer.
That said, there are a couple of downsides. As a standard tube line, there’s limited space for luggage and no proper racks for suitcases. Also, trains are a bit dated, so it’s not exactly the best first impression of London.
The good news? Transport for London is planning to upgrade the Piccadilly Line trains between December 2026 and June 2027, which should make a big difference to comfort and overall experience.
To pay, simply use your contactless card or phone to tap when entering and exiting the underground station.
Elizabeth Line
The Elizabeth Line is, in our experience, the best balance between price and convenience, and it works for pretty much every type of traveller. As the newest line in London, it offers a much more comfortable ride at a reasonable price, usually around £15 to central London.
It’s not a traditional “tube” line, but more of a hybrid railway, which means faster journeys. You can reach central London in around 30 minutes, with stops at key locations like Paddington Station, Tottenham Court Road Station, and Liverpool Street Station.
Paying is simple too, just tap your card or phone at the entry and exit gates, the same way you would on the tube.
Heathrow Express
The Heathrow Express is the fastest way to get from Heathrow Airport to central London. It takes you directly to Paddington Station in just 15 minutes.
That speed is great, but it can also be a downside. If your hotel isn’t near Paddington, you’ll need to switch to another form of transport, which adds extra time and cost. It’s definitely something to consider before booking.
This is where it gets a bit tricky. The Heathrow Express can actually be cheaper or more expensive than the Elizabeth Line. If you book 30+ days in advance, tickets can be as low as £10. But if you leave it until closer to your travel date, prices usually jump to £26.
In terms of comfort, it’s a step up from the Underground. There are dedicated luggage racks, more spacious seating, and an overall smoother experience.
However, unlike the Elizabeth Line or Piccadilly Line, you’ll typically need to book in advance to get the best price, otherwise, it quickly becomes one of the most expensive options.
Book your Heathrow Express ticket as soon as you know your travel dates. Don't leave it until the last minute! If you have kids aged 15 or under, they can travel for free in Standard Class when accompanied by a paying adult.
Taxi
Taking a taxi from Heathrow Airport is the most convenient way to get into central London, especially if you’ve just landed and want a completely stress-free journey.
There are two ways to do this. You can either grab a taxi on the spot at the airport or pre-book a private transfer in advance. While both work, we’d recommend booking ahead with Welcome Pickups. The driver will be monitoring your flight and will be at the arrivals hall upon your arrival.
Booking via Welcome Pickups, you can expect to pay around £80 to central London. Surprisingly, catching a taxi on the spot at the airport often costs a similar amount.
