If you’ve never driven on a volcanic island before, some roads can look a little intimidating on a map. La Palma is incredibly steep, which means you’ll be navigating plenty of hairpin turns, switchbacks, and dramatic inclines.
However, there’s no need to panic. The main infrastructure on the island is fantastic. The roads are exceptionally well-maintained, smoothly paved, and feature solid safety barriers where they matter most. The biggest thing to get used to is the lack of straight highways (if you can consider it a highway). You’ll be doing a lot of turning and gear-shifting. As long as you take your time, respect the speed limits, and let the occasional impatient local pass you by, you’ll find driving here to be a beautiful, scenic experience rather than a stressful one.

Technically, yes, but it requires a lot of patience and compromises. La Palma does have a reliable public bus system (locally called the guagua), and the fares are incredibly cheap.
The catch? The buses are designed to get locals between main towns like Santa Cruz and Los Llanos, not to ferry tourists to remote hiking trailheads or hidden black-sand beaches. If you rely solely on the bus, you’ll spend a massive chunk of your holiday waiting at bus stops, syncing your life to rigid schedules, or paying hefty taxi fares to bridge the gaps.
If you only want to sit on one beach for a week, you can manage without a car. If you want to actually see the island, the bus just won't cut it.
