After renting cars across Europe, Asia and Africa, our top recommendation, and the platform we always use, is QEEQ.

If the rental company tries to upsell you at the desk or charge extra for things you didnβt agree to, QEEQ steps in, and they will refund you.
3. Freeze a great price for $1
Not sure of your dates yet? Use the $1 freeze tool to lock in a deal and book later. In addition, if the price drops, they will auto-refund you the difference.

Do you actually need a car in La Palma?
The short answer? Yes. If you want to experience the real magic of La Palma, renting a car is practically essential.
While some islands are built around all-inclusive resorts where you never need to leave the pool, La Palma is an adventurerβs island. Its best spots are scattered across the map, and some are remote. Without your own vehicle, youβll find yourself severely limited in what you can see and do each day.
For example, the only way to reach Poris de Candelaria is by car.
La Palma travel guide: 3-Day Itinerary + Insider Tips
We recently explored La Palma by car, and honestly, it was one of the most magical, romantic trips weβve ever taken. We fell completely in love with the island, which is why weβve put together a complete guide filled with our best insider tips so you can have the perfect trip too.
What is it like to drive in La Palma? (The terrain & roads)
If youβve never driven on a volcanic island before, some roads can look a little intimidating on a map. La Palma is incredibly steep, which means youβll be navigating plenty of hairpin turns, switchbacks, and dramatic inclines.
However, thereβs no need to panic. The main infrastructure on the island is fantastic. The roads are exceptionally well-maintained, smoothly paved, and feature solid safety barriers where they matter most. The biggest thing to get used to is the lack of straight highways (if you can consider it a highway). Youβll be doing a lot of turning and gear-shifting. As long as you take your time, respect the speed limits, and let the occasional impatient local pass you by, youβll find driving here to be a beautiful, scenic experience rather than a stressful one.
Our top recommendation would be renting an automatic car if you
Can you get around La Palma without a car?
Technically, yes, but it requires a lot of patience and compromises. La Palma does have a reliable public bus system (locally called the guagua), and the fares are incredibly cheap.
The catch? The buses are designed to get locals between main towns like Santa Cruz and Los Llanos, not to ferry tourists to remote hiking trailheads or hidden black-sand beaches. If you rely solely on the bus, youβll spend a massive chunk of your holiday waiting at bus stops, syncing your life to rigid schedules, or paying hefty taxi fares to bridge the gaps.
If you only want to sit on one beach for a week, you can manage without a car. If you want to actually see the island, the bus just won't cut it.
The hidden costs of car rentals to watch out for
Renting a car should be straightforward, but the rental industry is famous for sneaky upcharges. When you're booking, the number one thing to watch out for is the "cheap baseline price" trap. Some low-cost companies will lure you in with an incredibly low daily rate online, only to hit you with mandatory, expensive insurance fees when you arrive at the desk.
Another common headache is the fuel policy. Look for a "full-to-full" policy where you pick the car up full and return it full. Avoid "pre-purchase" policies where they charge you an inflated rate for a full tank upfront and tell you to return it empty; youβll almost always end up losing money on the fuel you didn't use.
Make sure to always take pictures of the dashboard and the car inside and out to avoid any conflicts when returning the car.
We booked our car through QEEQ and had no issues when picking up or returning the car.
Is parking easy to find in La Palma?
For the most part, parking on La Palma is relatively straightforward and, best of all, usually free. You won't find the aggressive parking meters or expensive multi-story garages that plague major European cities.
The only real challenges happen in the historic centres of Santa Cruz de La Palma and Los Llanos during peak morning shopping hours, where street spots fill up quickly.

Quick tips for renting a car in La Palma
Book early, especially during high season, as the good cars go fast
Ideally, choose an SUV, because many beautiful spots have unpaved roads.
Always opt for full insurance (worth it for peace of mind), but also damage can be caused by other people and sometimes βthingsβ. It is a volcanic island after all
Double-check pickup location (some are right at the airport, others use a shuttle)
