5 Best Things To Do in Tenerife North (UPDATED)

Share:

Tenerife is a beautiful island, but let’s be honest, many of its most popular spots now feel overcrowded and far from the authentic experience people are really searching for.

After visiting Tenerife year after year, we’ve naturally gravitated towards the quieter side of the island, where life feels slower, landscapes are wilder, and experiences still feel genuinely local. From misty mountain villages to dramatic coastlines and hidden natural pools, the north offers a completely different version of Tenerife.

In this guide, we’re sharing the best things to do in Tenerife North, including lesser-known experiences we’ve discovered over time that show just how special this part of the island really is.

1. Cueva del Viento, Icod de los Vinos

Cueva del Viento, Icod de los Vinos

This is Europe’s longest volcanic lava tube, stretching over 17 kilometres and ranking among the longest in the world. What makes it so special isn’t just the chance to see a volcanic island from above, but to experience Tenerife from a completely different perspective, beneath the surface of this incredible volcanic island.

Fortunately, they offer tours in English, German, or Spanish, but please note that they have limited tickets available per day, so don’t miss out!

2. Canyoning Experience, Los Arcos

Not to be biased, but this is genuinely one of our favourite things to do in Tenerife North. Canyoneering probably isn’t the first activity that comes to mind when you think of Tenerife. Still, the terrain here is incredibly surprising and dramatically sculpted, almost reminiscent of landscapes you’d expect to find in Jordan.

Alongside sharing the best things to do in Tenerife North, we also want to point you towards the right organiser, because that can really make or break the experience. For this adventure, Natura Xtreme Tenerife ↗️ is the one to go with. You’ll be part of a small group (limited to just nine participants), making it a fun, adrenaline-filled, and safe experience that truly feels like a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

3. Organic Vineyard with Tasting and Tapas, Arafo

This is one of our favourite cultural experiences in Tenerife North, and a brilliant way to slow down and experience the island differently. You don’t often get the chance to say you’ve tasted wine grown on volcanic soil, and it adds a whole new layer to understanding Tenerife’s landscape and traditions.

During the experience, you’ll learn about local winemaking before tasting four different wines, thoughtfully paired with Canarian cheeses and assorted croquettes. Simple, relaxed, and deeply rooted in the island’s culture.

4. Anaga Hiking Tour & Enchanted Forest, Anaga

👉 Check availability & secure your spot 👈

In the north of Tenerife, you’ll find two of the island’s oldest and most dramatic landscapes: the Teno Massif and the Anaga Massif. For us, Anaga is the real standout, especially if you love getting outdoors, slowing down, and experiencing a place in a more meaningful way. This is Tenerife at its wildest, where misty forests meet sharp ridgelines and everyday life still feels deeply connected to nature.

The experience we’re recommending lasts around seven hours, and honestly, it’s one of those days where you finish feeling like every minute and every pound was worth it. Along the way, you’ll hike past breathtaking viewpoints, remote cave villages (hard to believe people still live here), rocky ridge lines, open forested slopes, and deep green valleys that feel a world away from the busier parts of the island.

5. Buggy Teide Sunset National Park, Puerto de la Cruz

When sharing the best things to do in the north of Tenerife, watching the sunset from Mount Teide is a must, but doing it by buggy from Puerto de la Cruz makes the experience even more unforgettable.

The journey itself is far from a simple drive. Along the way, you’ll stop at an ancient volcanic mouth, dramatic viewpoints, and surreal lunar-like landscapes. It’s as cool as it sounds!

Fun facts about Tenerife’s sky:

  • One of Earth's clearest skies for astronomy.

  • The Canary Islands have a unique law (since 1988) controlling light pollution, flight paths, and radio signals to protect the dark skies.

  • You can see almost all official constellations (83 out of 88).

Give me anything adventurous or adrenaline-packed and I’m in. My favourite country so far? Montenegro: mountains, coast, and endless adventures… what’s not to love?

I love hunting down weird, wonderful, and totally unique places, experiences, foods, and stays to check out. That’s my thing.
