Benagil Cave Tips 2025: Best Time, Tour Options & What to Expect

Share:

Hidden just off the Algarve coast, the Benagil Cave is one of Portugal’s most iconic natural wonders, and it’s easy to see why. Think golden cliffs, a hidden beach, and sunlight pouring in through a giant hole in the ceiling. Yep, it’s that good.

But as dreamy as it looks, getting there isn’t quite as simple as it seems. With new rules in place for 2025 and more people visiting than ever, it’s worth being prepared. Here's everything we wish we’d known before going, from the best time to visit to what’s changed (and what hasn’t).

What Is Benagil Cave?

Benagil Cave (or Algar de Benagil) is a massive sea cave carved out by the Atlantic Ocean, located near the small village of Benagil, between Carvoeiro and Armação de Pêra. It’s famous for its dramatic skylight (known locally as the “eye”) that lets sunlight pour into the cave, lighting up the sand and sea from above.

You can’t reach it on foot as it’s only accessible by water, which makes getting there part of the adventure.

Best Time to Visit Benagil Cave

If you want calm seas, soft light and fewer crowds, timing matters.

✅ Best time of day:
Morning, especially between 8am and 10am. The sea is usually calmer and the cave is quieter. Plus, the early light streaming in through the roof is pretty magical.

📅 Best time of year:
Late spring (May–early June) or early autumn (September–October). The weather’s still warm, and you avoid peak summer crowds.

🚫 When to avoid:
Midday in high season (July–August). It gets very busy and the sea can be rougher. Also, tours may be fully booked unless reserved well in advance.

What’s New in 2025? (Updated Rules & Regulations)

Since August 2024, a few big changes were introduced to protect the cave and improve safety. Here's what’s new:

  • 🚫 No more walking onto the cave beach from boats. Boat tours can take you into the cave (if conditions are safe), but you can’t get out and explore on foot anymore.

  • 🚫 Swimming into the cave is now banned. Strong currents and boat traffic make it too risky. Authorities are enforcing this, so it’s not worth trying.

  • 🚫 No private Stand Up Paddle (SUP) or kayak rentals from Benagil Beach. You’ll need to go with a licensed tour operator.

  • All SUP and kayak access must be guided. This keeps things safer and more organised, and honestly, makes for a better experience.

How to Visit the Cave: Tour Options

There’s more than one way to reach the cave, depending on your style, budget, and sense of adventure.

🚤 1. Boat Tour (Most Popular)

If you want a relaxed, low-effort experience, this is your go-to. You’ll cruise along the coast and peek into the cave (without going ashore), soaking up the views.

  • Departs from: Benagil, Carvoeiro, Portimão or Albufeira

  • Duration: 1–2 hours

  • Good for: Families, non-swimmers, people who want to just sit back and enjoy the ride

  • Tip: Choose a smaller boat for better access. Big ones can’t always get close, especially if the tide’s high.

🛶 2. Kayak Tour (More Active)

This is for the adventurous. You’ll paddle along the coast, pass by a few hidden caves, and glide to the entrance of Benagil. You won’t get out at the cave, but you’ll float right into the space and linger, which is kind of magical in its own right.

  • Departs from: Marinha Beach or designated launch spots nearby

  • Duration: 2–2.5 hours

  • Good for: Active travellers, couples, solo adventurers

  • Tip: Make sure your guide is licensed (they’ll provide gear, safety tips, and route planning). We prefer to book with GetYourGuide, as we can see exactly what we are signing up for and read the reviews.

🏄‍♀️ 3. Stand-Up Paddleboard Tour (Scenic + Chill)

Similar to kayaking but with a bit more balance and core involved. Great if you’ve SUP-ed before and want a fun, scenic challenge. Again, no stepping inside the cave anymore, but the view from the water is worth it.

  • Departs from: Praia da Marinha or nearby coves

  • Duration: 1.5–3 hours

  • Good for: Confident paddleboarders or anyone who’s up for trying something new

  • Tip: Book a morning slot, less wind, easier paddling.

What to Pack for Benagil Cave Tour

  • 🧴 Sunscreen (reef-safe, please)

  • 🧢 Hat and sunglasses

  • 👙 Swimwear and towel

  • 🩴 Water shoes or sandals

  • 💦 Water bottle

  • 📸 Waterproof camera or GoPro

  • 🧯 Dry bag (if you’re kayaking or on a SUP)

Is Benagil Cave Worth Visiting in 2025?

Absolutely. Even with the new rules, Benagil Cave is still one of the most stunning places you can visit in Portugal. The magic isn’t in standing on the sand, it’s in being there, surrounded by towering rock walls, golden light, and the sound of the sea echoing through the cave.

Just go with the right expectations. You won’t be stepping inside like you’ve maybe seen on Instagram, but the journey and view from the water is still something you’ll remember forever.

Final Tips from Us

  • 🎟️ Book in advance, especially in peak season — tours sell out fast.

  • 🌊 Check sea conditions the day before, especially for kayaking or SUP.

  • 🚙 Arrive early — Benagil parking is limited and fills up quickly.

  • 🙅‍♀️ Don’t try to swim in — it’s not safe and you’ll likely get fined.

  • 📍 Pair it with a visit to Marinha Beach — it's just around the corner and one of the Algarve’s most beautiful spots.
