10 Breathtaking Beaches in the Algarve You Can’t Miss
Portugal’s Algarve coast is one of those places that just keeps surprising you. One minute you’re standing on a cliff with endless ocean views, the next you’re walking through a tunnel to find a hidden cove. With over 100 beaches scattered along the coastline, it’s a dream for anyone who loves exploring, and a challenge to narrow down.
Whether you're planning a trip, looking for ideas, or just love discovering new places through our eyes, here are 10 beaches in the Algarve that genuinely stand out.
1. Praia da Marinha – The Algarve Classic
If you’ve seen photos of the Algarve, chances are you’ve seen this beach. Praia da Marinha is known for its towering limestone cliffs, crystal-clear water, and natural rock arches that look like they were designed for postcards.
It’s a bit of a climb down, but totally worth it.
Tip: Start your visit at the clifftop viewpoint, it's one of the best photo spots on the coast.
2. Benagil Beach – Home of the Famous Cave
This beach itself is lovely, but what makes Benagil special is what’s nearby, the Benagil Cave. You can’t walk to it, but kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding from the beach is a great way to get there. Once inside, the sunlight streaming through the roof makes it feel like you’ve stepped into another world.
Good to know: Swimming is not permitted as it’s farther (and rougher) than it looks!
3. Praia do Camilo – A Small Beach with Big Views
Down a wooden staircase of around 120 steps, you’ll find a beach that’s tucked between cliffs with calm, shallow water. Praia do Camilo is perfect if you’re after a peaceful swim and don’t mind a few steps on the way back up.
Good to know: There’s a restaurant at the top with great views, but bring water and snacks if you plan to stay a while.
4. Praia da Falésia – For Long Beach Walks and Sunset Views
This beach stretches for several kilometres, making it ideal for anyone who loves a walk along the sand. Backed by orange-red cliffs and open to the Atlantic, it feels more spacious than most Algarve beaches and is a great place to escape the crowds.
5. Praia do Carvalho – A Hidden Cove Worth Finding
This smaller beach is tucked between cliffs and reached by a tunnel carved into the rock. It feels like a secret spot, with clear water, soft sand and a quiet atmosphere. Great for a more relaxed beach day.
Tip: There are no facilities here, so bring what you need and carry out everything you bring in.
6. Praia dos Três Irmãos – Explore the Arches and Rock Formations
Located near Alvor, this beach is known for its dramatic rock formations, natural arches and little caves that you can explore when the tide is out. It’s a fun spot for a bit of beach adventure without going far.
Good to know: Parts of the beach connect to others at low tide, so it’s worth exploring beyond the main area.
7. Ilha Deserta – Remote and Peaceful
If you’re looking to escape completely, Ilha Deserta (also called Barreta Island) is only accessible by boat from Faro. With no roads, hotels or crowds, it’s all about nature. Think soft sand, clear water, and a peaceful setting.
What to expect: One restaurant, plenty of space, and that feeling of being far away, even if you’re not.
8. Praia da Bordeira – Wild and Wide-Open
Located in the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, Praia da Bordeira is one of the Algarve’s more rugged beaches. It’s huge, backed by sand dunes, and often has stronger waves, making it ideal for people who enjoy nature and fewer crowds.
Tip: There’s a wooden walkway that gives you great views without having to climb the dunes.
9. Praia do Amado – Surfer Central
If you’re into surfing, or just like the energy of surf spots, this beach has a relaxed, outdoorsy feel. It’s located on the west coast, where the waves are stronger and the vibe is more low-key than the southern beaches.
For non-surfers: It’s still a great place to relax, watch the surfers, or take a beginner’s lesson.
10. Praia da Arrifana – A Clifftop Classic
This beach is set in a curved bay, surrounded by cliffs, and is popular with both surfers and swimmers. What really makes it special is the view from the top, especially around sunset.
Tip: Head up to the viewpoint above the beach for a sweeping view of the coastline.
