Packing for the Albanian Riviera can be surprisingly tricky. The summer months in Ksamil are intensely hot, incredibly sunny, and your days will be a non-stop blur of hopping between sandy beach clubs, boat tours, and waterfront seafood dinners.
If you just pack your standard holiday wardrobe, you will quickly find yourself frustrated by things like sharp pebbles on the seabed, relentless midday sun, and cash-only beach logistics.
Max and I have made all the classic packing mistakes, so you don’t have to. Instead of throwing your entire wardrobe into a suitcase, here is our tried-and-tested list of summer essentials you will actually use in Ksamil, along with the exact items that will level up your trip (with direct links).
1. Water shoes (to avoid the Sea Urchin trauma)
If you only buy one thing for your trip to Ksamil, make it a solid pair of water shoes. While the main beach clubs like Lori Beach have soft sand, the entry points to the smaller coves and the seabed around the four Ksamil Islands transition into sharp pebbles, rocky slabs, and, most importantly, hidden sea urchins.
These lightweight, quick-drying water shoes are genuinely comfortable, pack flat, and will completely stop you from doing that awkward, tiptoe walk over the sharp stones to get into the water.

2. A heavy-duty waterproof dry bag
Once you start using a dry bag, you will never go back to a standard canvas beach tote. A dry bag is a total game-changer for Ksamil for two major reasons:
Boat trips & paddling: Whether you are renting a kayak to paddle across to the twin islands or booking a guided local boat tour, a dry bag keeps your camera, wallet, and towel 100% dry against rogue waves and splashes.

A dry bag allows you to pack up your phone and cash, seal it tight, and easily swim with it out into the water rather than leaving it unattended on your sunbed.
When buying your dry bag, opt for a bright, high-visibility color instead of basic black. Max and I went for the bright yellow one (you can see it in our photo below!). Not only does it make it way harder to accidentally lose or leave behind, but it acts as a crucial safety buoy. If you are swimming out to the islands, passing jet skis and local boats can easily spot you bobbing in the water from a mile away!

The Mediterranean sun in Southern Albania is intensely fierce, especially between 11 AM and 3 PM. Because you will be in and out of the crystal-clear Ionian Sea all day, you need a suncream that actually stays put without feeling like a thick layer of grease.

Most boutique hotels and Airbnbs in Ksamil do not allow you to take their room towels down to the beach, and renting them at beach clubs can get expensive.
Instead of packing a massive, bulky terry-cloth towel that takes up half your suitcase and stays damp for days, grab a high-quality microfibre towel. As a vital health rule, you cannot drink the tap water in Ksamil. Buying endless single-use plastic bottles at the local market is not only terrible for the environment, but it also adds up fast over a week-long trip.
