Why visit Ksamil?
Ksamil is a tiny town in southern Albania, sitting just across the water from the Greek island of Corfu. Best known for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, laid-back island vibe, and vibrant beach clubs, it's often referred to as the "Maldives of Europe".
While its popularity has exploded recently, meaning peak summer months are no longer the ultra-budget secret they used to be, it still offers incredible value if you plan smartly. If you are travelling from the US, UK, or mainland Europe, it remains a fantastic budget-friendly alternative to more expensive spots like the Amalfi Coast or Mykonos, without sacrificing beauty.
Flights to Albania
The most common way to reach the Riviera is flying into Tirana International Airport (TIA).
We flew Ryanair from London Stansted to Tirana, and return flights cost us €225 for two people. Because it was a quick weekend getaway, we skipped the pricey baggage add-ons and travelled with just one small backpack each.
2026 insider tip: Flight prices fluctuate massively by season. July and August see huge surges, but you can still find incredible flight deals during the shoulder months (May and September) if you book 1-2 months in advance.

Getting to Ksamil
Once you land in Tirana, you have a few hours’ journey down south to Ksamil. You have three main transport pathways to choose from:
The first option is by bus, which is the most affordable, costing around €46, but it’s the longest, taking over 6 hours and operating on limited daily schedules.
The second option is by private transfer, which can be the most expensive, usually costing around €250 one way. Instead of hailing a standard taxi at the curb, we highly recommend booking a private transfer ahead of time with Welcome Pickups. By booking in advance, a professional, English-speaking driver will monitor your flight status for delays and meet you right at the arrival gate with a name sign. This eliminates the risk of local taxi overcharging, ensures you won't get stuck in uncomfortable language barriers, and avoids any stressful scam situations right after you land.
The third option, and the one we chose: renting a car. Tirana airport to Ksamil is roughly a 4.5-hour drive; not only is it more convenient, but it also gives you total freedom to explore the area and neighbouring cities. Our car rental for three days was incredibly cheap at €94.
The local car rental insurance trap
When we booked our flights, we noticed a car rental add-on deal through Ryanair that looked like an absolute bargain, so we booked it. However, when we arrived at the Tirana airport desk to pick up the keys, we were hit with a massive surprise: the local rental agent claimed our pre-paid third-party insurance didn't count, forcing us to pay an extra €108 on the spot for mandatory local cover.
This local insurance upsell is a notoriously common issue at Tirana airport counters. Ever since that frustrating experience, we have completely changed how we rent cars while travelling, and now we only use QEEQ for our car rentals.
How to protect yourself:
One of our top tips is to rent your car directly through QEEQ car rental. With their platform, you can opt for a small extra protection fee during booking. If a stubborn local rental company refuses your insurance or forces an upsell at the counter anyway, QEEQ will actually step in and refund you that extra cost. They also let you compare different companies to guarantee the best, most transparent prices on the market.
We also spent €81 on fuel, which comfortably covered our entire round-trip from Tirana and all of our coastal driving around Ksamil.
Save yourself the airport headache and compare transparent, verified rental rates via QEEQ.
Hotels by the beach
Where you stay in Ksamil can make or break your trip, especially now. Because almost every patch of sand in town is owned by private beach clubs, daily sunbed rentals can really add up. To get the most value, we highly recommend staying at a hotel that includes exclusive, private beach access with complimentary loungers for guests.
When we did this trip, we stayed at the Emar Beachfront Hotel Ksamil, just before the crazy peak season kicked in, paying just €99 for 2 nights. It included a brilliant, fresh breakfast and put us literally steps away from the sand with beautiful sea views. While it remains a solid choice, it’s important to note that it is no longer as incredibly cheap as it was when we first visited, as prices have naturally risen alongside Ksamil's massive boom in popularity. However, it is still a fair, highly competitive option compared to some of the staggering price hikes across town, which is why we still recommend it if you want beachfront views on a more reasonable budget.
With that said, if we were to head back to the Albanian Riviera today, we would likely opt for a property that bundles in a few more upscale perks, like a dedicated swimming pool or guaranteed loungers on the beach, to get the absolute maximum value for our money (to learn more about where we stayed, you can read our deep-dive review here: Best Place To Stay In Ksamil? Affordable Beachfront Hotel).
If you want to skip the daily beach crowds and enjoy premium amenities at a fraction of what you’d pay in Greece or Italy, we highly recommend booking these four top-rated accommodations well in advance. Because they sit right on Ksamil’s most sought-after coastline, rooms fill up incredibly fast for the summer season.
Eating & drinking in Ksamil
Albanian cuisine is both flavourful and budget-friendly. In Ksamil, a typical meal at a local restaurant ranges from €6 to €17 per person. Seafood dishes, a local speciality, might be on the higher end, but they are worth every penny.
We spent €67 in three days on food and drinks, which included:
A delicious shrimp pasta and pepperoni pizza at Bar Restorant Luna (highly recommend for sunset!)
Beach snacks and drinks
A couple of casual meals around town
Eating out in Ksamil is super affordable, and portion sizes are very generous.
Fun extras
You cannot visit Ksamil without doing some sort of water-related activity. We rented a sea kayak for €25 (we haggled the price down from €40) and explored the nearby uninhabited Ksamil Islands with it. A must-do if you visit! We even picked up a small souvenir for €4 (because who doesn’t love fridge magnets?).
If you prefer to lock in your activities before you arrive to avoid the beachside price haggling, you can find incredible deals on guided day trips, speedboats, and historical excursions online:
Our 3-day cost breakdown (May weekend)
We visited Ksamil in early May, which is just before the high season kicks off. That means lower prices, quieter beaches, and still plenty of sunshine.
Here’s exactly what we spent between two people:
| Item | Cost |
|---|---|
| Flights (London Stansted -> Tirana) | €225 |
| Car rental | €94 |
| Additional car insurance | €108 |
| Car fuel | €81 |
| Hotel (2 nights) | €99 |
| Food | €67 |
| Kayak rental | €25 |
| Souvenir | €4 |
| Total (3 days / 2 nights) | €703 |
As you can see, we spent around €351.50 per person for flights, transport, accommodation, food, and activities. If we had successfully avoided the car rental counter insurance trap by booking a fully protected car package through QEEQ, our trip would have cost an incredible €297.50 per person!
Additional costs to factor in for longer trips
We had a very tight itinerary during our trip to Ksamil, but if you are planning a longer trip, then you will likely have other costs to account for, such as beach umbrella rentals, activities and more. If we had more time, here are 10 Things We Wish We’d Tried in Our Trip to Ksamil, Albania, for ideas on visiting historical spots like the ancient ruins of Butrint National Park or the mesmerising Blue Eye spring.
And remember, because we travelled in the May shoulder season, we got the absolute best pricing. If you are planning a longer stay or visiting between late June and August, your daily budget will need to accommodate the peak season price surges.
