Let’s be real: renting a car at Tirana Airport should be easy. But between aggressive upsells, dodgy rental companies, and shady fuel policies… it can feel a bit like the Wild West.

If you want to experience the absolute best of Albania (not just the capital), a car is non-negotiable. However, you definitely don’t want to start your holiday getting scammed at the arrivals desk, as we unfortunately did.

To save you the headache, we’ve done the research and braved the rental counters so you don’t have to. These are the best car rental options at Tirana Airport that won’t overcharge you or ruin your holiday vibe.

In a hurry? This is our favourite car rental company

After renting cars across dozens of countries in Europe, Asia, and Africa, our top recommendation, and the platform we personally use, is QEEQ.

It’s an excellent comparison platform that gathers trusted international and local brands in one place, showing you transparent pricing with no hidden fees. Because we travel so much, we constantly benchmark their prices against other major platforms, and they consistently come out as the cheapest and most reliable option.

Albania is a small country, and renting a car is the easiest way to explore it.

We always use QEEQ to compare trusted local and international rental companies and find the best prices with full transparency. Use code QRCARMA5 for 5% off your car rental.

But what makes QEEQ really stand out are the extras that will protect you at Tirana Airport from scams:

  • Worry-Free Service: It covers unexpected issues like vehicle delays, downgrades, or surprise charges. If any of these happens to you, contact the support team, and they’ll help you.

  • Freeze a great price for $1: You can lock in deals and book later for $1. The best part is that if the price decreases, QEEQ will refund you the difference.

  • You get a proper driving guide when booking: Once you book, they will send you a personalised PDF with all the must-know info about driving in Albania.

Best local car rental companies at Tirana Airport

If you’d rather book directly (although you won’t get the same benefits), these are the two local companies we recommend:

Karruka Rental

  • No cash or credit card deposit requirements, but they have slightly higher daily rates.

AutoAlb Rent

  • Well-maintained and clean vehicles

  • You require a shuttle to reach the office

Quick tips for renting a car at Tirana Airport

  • Book early, especially during high season, as the good cars go fast.

  • If you are planning on visiting remote locations, book a high car, so the underside doesn’t get damaged.

  • Always opt for full insurance (worth it for peace of mind), but damage can also be caused by other people and sometimes “things”.

  • Double-check pickup location (some are right at the airport; others use a shuttle).

  • Take photos of the car at pickup and drop-off, just in case. Our car had a few imperfections, so the pictures saved us.

Car rental scams to avoid at Tirana Airport

By no means am I saying all the companies are unethical, but some will try to squeeze money out of you, so you need to be prepared:

  • The pre-booked insurance rejection: We arrived at the rental desk with our booking confirmation and insurance booked through Ryanair. The agent told us the insurance wasn’t valid and we had to pay an extra €108 (we never got a refund from Ryanair). This won’t happen if you book through QEEQ.

  • The "scratch" and damage: This is the most classic scam in the book. When you return the car, the agent magically finds a tiny scratch or dent on the lower bumper or wheels and claims you caused it, threatening to deduct hundreds of Euros from your card. Make sure you take pictures and videos.

  • The fuel policy: Your agreement says "full-to-full," but when you turn the key at pickup, the gauge is sitting just a fraction below full. If you return it the same way, they will slap you with an exorbitant refuelling service fee.

  • Switching vehicles: You book a specific car, but are handed a smaller city car instead without any price adjustment.

Remember to book through QEEQ to be protected, and make sure you prepare for these potential encounters at the pick-up or drop-off.

Max

Hey! I’m Max, the “researcher” half of Carma Adventures. I’m half Spanish, half Scottish, which probably explains why I love cold weather and apparently have no sense of danger.

Give me anything adventurous or adrenaline-packed and I’m in. My favourite country so far? Montenegro: mountains, coast, and endless adventures… what’s not to love?

I love hunting down weird, wonderful, and totally unique places, experiences, foods, and stays to check out. That’s my thing.
