If you’re scrolling through social media trying to figure out if Ksamil is actually worth adding to your travel list, we’re here to give you the unedited truth. What Max planned as a romantic, relaxing birthday weekend getaway quickly spiralled into a rollercoaster of flight delays, rental car battles, severe sun poisoning, and an emergency room fever run.

But even with the chaos, we kept looking at each other, saying, “We wish we had more time”.

Ksamil is beautiful, but it is also changing fast. If you want to experience the crystal-clear Ionian waters without falling into the major tourist traps that catch out almost everyone, here is exactly how our 48 hours went down and the lessons you need to steal from us.

The surprise trip that almost didn’t happen

It all kicked off on a Saturday morning in May. Max had secretly planned a mystery birthday trip for me, but budget airline logistics had other ideas. After boarding our Ryanair flight out of London, we spent an hour sitting on the tarmac before the crew dropped the ultimate buzzkill: technical issues meant everyone had to deboard.

After a stressful wait in the terminal, we finally boarded a replacement aircraft. I still had zero clue where we were flying until we touched down at Tirana Airport (TIA). From there, Max blindfolded me for a four-hour road trip south. When the blindfold finally came off, we had arrived at the stunning Albanian Riviera, more specifically, Ksamil.

Renting a car at Tirana Airport

Let’s be real, driving in Albania is an absolute adventure. The coastal roads winding from Tirana down to Ksamil are incredibly scenic, but the driving styles are aggressive, rules feel highly optional, and you will frequently share the road with stray animals or tourists swerving unexpectedly. You need to be a confident driver to handle it.

Despite the chaotic traffic, having a car gives you total freedom to explore hidden beaches. However, the real danger isn't the roads; it’s the car rental desks.

We booked a vehicle with OK Mobility through Ryanair ahead of time, thinking we were completely sorted. But when we reached the airport counter, the agent claimed our prepaid insurance didn't cover local requirements and aggressively pressured us into paying an extra €108 on the spot. Exhausted and ready to start the trip, we reluctantly paid for it.

We later found out this is an incredibly common scare tactic used at the airport to extract cash from tourists.

How to avoid getting scammed: Don't make the same financial mistake we did. Hold your ground, bring physical printouts of your coverage, and use a platform that protects you. Max and I now exclusively use QEEQ because their “worry-free” service acts as a shield when local operators try to throw sketchy hidden charges your way at the counter.

The location

Once we shook off the rental desk stress and arrived in Ksamil, it took exactly five minutes to realise why people fall in love with this place. The water is an unbelievable, vibrant turquoise, and the sand is pure white.

Max booked us into the EMAR Beachfront Hotel Ksamil, which sits right on the main coastal walking street.

  • The vibe: Waking up, stepping onto our private balcony, and drinking morning tea to the sound of the crashing waves was surreal.

  • The convenience: We were smack in the centre of the action. We walked to dozens of beachfront seafood restaurants, local shops, and bars without ever needing to touch our rental car keys or pay for overpriced beach taxis.

Because EMAR only has 10 rooms in total, it books out months in advance for the peak summer season. If you want to read our breakdown of the rooms, the open-air terrace breakfast, and the noise levels, check out: Is EMAAR Beachfront Hotel Ksamil Worth It? Our Honest Review.

We highly recommend checking prices across multiple platforms before booking to avoid peak markups. I always check Vio.com because they compare rates across 100+ platforms at once, letting you catch price drops that standard booking sites miss. You can check availability and lock in the lowest rates for your dates directly on Vio.com.

Kayaking, hidden caves, and crucial beach lessons

With only one full day to explore, we wanted to get away from the crowded main beach clubs. The water looked too tempting to ignore, so we decided to rent a kayak and go island hopping.

Paddling out to the uninhabited small islands just off the coast was the highlight of our trip. There is a beautiful sense of peace when you find a deserted stretch of sand far away from the music of the beach bars. We paddled out to the outer Twin Islands for a quiet, romantic swim.

The shoreline danger & a better way to explore

While the water is crystal clear, the seabed around Ksamil is incredibly rocky and absolutely packed with hidden sea urchins. Stepping on one will instantly ruin your holiday. If you are exploring on your own, protective gear is mandatory. I recommend packing a specific type of lightweight water shoe that will save your feet. You can grab these and our exact packing checklist here: What to Pack for Ksamil: Summer Essentials (Tried & Tested).

Our speedboat recommendation: If you don't want to pack bulky snorkelling gear or spend your day exhausting yourself paddling a kayak, you should check out the Ksamil Pigeon Cave Snorkelling & Speedboat Tour via GetYourGuide. It costs around €37 per person, departs right near the main beach strip, and includes free drinks and snorkel masks.

It hits all the major spots you can't reach by foot, like Mirror Beach, Gull Beach, and the deep blue water inside Pigeon Cave. Plus, the captain lets you stay on the Twin Islands for as long as you want before picking you up. Relaxing days, lively nights

What I loved most about the town's layout is how effortlessly the atmosphere shifts. By day, everything revolves around the lazy beach clubs, swimming, and island hopping. But once the sun goes down, the Shetitore promenade lights up, and the music hits the water.

If you are looking for a romantic seafood dinner under the stars, you can easily find it. But if you want to dress up, head to a massive open-air beach club, and dance until sunrise, Ksamil transforms into a mini-Ibiza during the peak summer months.

Just keep in mind that the nightlife scene depends entirely on when you book. If you show up in July, it is an absolute party zone; if you visit in May as we did, it’s a beautifully relaxed, sleepy coastal escape. To make sure you don't book the wrong season, you can check out my seasonal breakdown here to see exactly how the crowds and party vibes change.

No matter what time of year you wander the promenade after dark, the town maintains a remarkably welcoming, laid-back atmosphere. Finding real food in a tourist-designed town

After a full day on the water, we spent the evening exploring the town on foot. Because Ksamil has grown so rapidly, the main strips are full of overpriced, generic tourist restaurants serving subpar food.

However, if you know where to look, the local food scene is incredible. We bypassed the hotel restaurants entirely to track down authentic spots, and we found two gems that made the whole trip:

The ultimate downside: sun poisoning & a 40°C fever

Just when we thought we had mastered Ksamil, the reality of the Mediterranean sun caught up with us. We foolishly thought we could skip sunscreen during our hours on the water. By Sunday night, we looked exactly like boiled lobsters.

It got significantly worse on Monday morning. As we started the 4-hour drive back to Tirana Airport, I woke up violently ill. We had to make dozens of emergency stops along the highway for me to throw up.

By the time we staggered into the airport terminal, I was shivering uncontrollably. The airport paramedics checked my temperature and revealed I had a 40°C fever caused by severe sun poisoning. We were absolutely terrified the airline wouldn't let me board the plane. Luckily, after a strong dose of paracetamol and running quick safety checks, they gave me the all-clear to fly. I spent the next three days completely stuck in bed.

The takeaway: The sun here is absolutely brutal, especially when it reflects off the white sand and turquoise water. Do not compromise on high-quality sun protection, and ensure you have medical travel insurance sorted before you set foot in the country.

The verdict: Is Ksamil actually worth it?

Despite the flight delays, the €100 rental desk scam, the aggressive sunburns, and the emergency room fever run, Ksamil is 100% worth visiting.

It is one of the most visually stunning coastal destinations in Europe, offering an incredible mix of affordable luxury and raw adventure. However, it is no longer a hidden secret. If you show up unprepared, you will overpay at tourist traps and get caught out by local scams. But if you protect your cash with smart tools like QEEQ and Vio.com, pack the right gear, and look beyond the main commercial beaches, you will fall completely in love with this corner of Albania.

Carol

Hi! I’m Carol, half of the duo behind Carma Adventures and the designated planner of all our trips. I’m Brazilian, a total sunshine addict, and completely in love with Indonesia (seriously, I could talk about it all day).

I’m a bit of a picky eater, but put anything sweet in front of me and I’ll never say no. When we travel, you’ll usually find me scouting out dreamy luxury stays: give me a spa, a pool, and a cosy robe and I’m in heaven.

But here’s the twist: even though I love a little indulgence, I’m also the one who’s always digging up clever travel hacks, hidden deals, and smart ways to save money without sacrificing the experience. It’s basically my superpower.
