Choosing the right accommodation can completely make or break a beach holiday. For our trip to Ksamil, Max surprised me by booking a room at EMAR Beachfront Hotel Ksamil, a newly renovated, beachfront property right in the centre of town.

Because so many of you saw our trip on social media and reached out to ask if this budget-friendly spot is actually as good as it looks online, I am breaking down the good, the bad, and the brutally honest details of our stay to help you decide if it's the right choice for your trip.

Watch the chaos: You can watch the full, hilarious surprise hotel room reveal in our vlog below! It didn't go exactly as Max planned, but we had a blast.

1. The location

When it comes to beach access, EMAR Hotel is sitting on prime real estate. It is located directly on the main coastal walking street, meaning I was exactly a 60-second walk from the sand of the central beaches.

  • The vibe: Waking up, stepping onto my private balcony, and drinking morning tea to the sound of the Ionian Sea waves was incredible.

  • The convenience: I was smack in the centre of the action. Max and I easily walked to dozens of beachfront seafood restaurants, local shops, and bars without needing to use our rental car or paying for expensive beach taxis.

While we didn't use a vehicle at all once we arrived in town, we did choose to rent a car directly from Tirana Airport for our road trip down to have total freedom to explore the surrounding Riviera. If you're on the fence about whether to drive, take the bus or book a transfer, we broke down all the costs, routes, and hidden traps in the guide: Getting From Tirana to Ksamil: It's Simpler Than You Think!

My go-to car rental hack: If you do decide to drive, we always book our cars through QEEQ. They consistently find the best rates across all major suppliers, and their “worry-free” service is a total lifesaver when car rental companies try to throw sketchy hidden charges your way.

Car rental at the airport can feel like a total minefield, so to make sure you don't get ripped off by the aggressive desk upsells we fell for on our first trip, check out the Best Car Rentals at Tirana Airport (Without Getting Ripped Off). You can also use our exclusive discount code QRCARMA5 at checkout to get an extra 5% off!

2. Room & pricing

EMAR is a small, 10-room boutique bed and breakfast that recently underwent a complete renovation. If you've been researching accommodation in Albania, you know that finding modern design at an affordable price point can be a massive gamble.

During our stay (around May, so shoulder season), we paid just under €50 per night for a deluxe double room with a balcony and a sea view.

  • Amenities included: Strong air conditioning (critical for summer), a mini-fridge to keep your drinks cold, an electric kettle (surprisingly rare in Albania!), and fast, free Wi-Fi.

  • The interior: The massive windows flood the bedroom with gorgeous natural light, and the modern bathrooms feature great water pressure and plenty of space to wash off the sand.

3. The standout perks (how this hotel saved us cash)

Ksamil has quickly become known for its expensive beach infrastructure, where renting a pair of wooden sun loungers can easily cost you €20 to €50 a day, depending on the beach club.

Staying at EMAR gives you two brilliant cost-saving loopholes that I used to save cash:

  1. Free lounge swings & chairs: The hotel features a cute setup right on its front terrace with lounge chairs and beach swings. I relaxed here and soaked up the views completely free of charge without paying a cent to a beach club.

  2. Free on-site private parking: Parking in central Ksamil during the peak summer months is an absolute nightmare and a major hidden expense. EMAR offers free, uncovered on-site parking spaces, making our independent day trips seamless.

4. The breakfast situation

Breakfast is included with your room rate, but it is important to know that this is not a standard buffet.

Instead, meals are cooked to order each morning and served directly on the open-air terrace overlooking the sea. I was served a traditional, filling Albanian breakfast plate featuring fresh eggs, local pastries, fruit, juice, and coffee. While it is incredibly fresh and hearty, the menu stays the same daily, so if you are staying for a full week, the options can feel a bit repetitive.

Looking for local dinners? Since Max and I preferred exploring the town for lunch and dinner, we didn't eat at the hotel restaurant. If you want to skip the overpriced, generic tourist traps nearby, I have two absolute favourite local spots for you to check out:

5. An honest warning before you book: the noise factor

To actually help you plan your trip, I believe in 100% transparency. Because EMAR Hotel sits directly on the vibrant beachfront promenade, it is right next to Ksamil’s top beach clubs and nightlife hubs.

  • If you love nightlife, this hotel is absolute perfection. You can walk straight to the music and stroll home safely in seconds.

  • If you are a light sleeper or travelling with kids, the bass and music from the beach clubs will carry into your room in the evenings during peak summer. We are incredibly heavy sleepers, so it didn't bother us at all, but if you value total silence, you will definitely want to request a room facing the inner courtyard or pack a solid pair of earplugs.

Because EMAR Beachfront Hotel Ksamil only has 10 rooms, it is absolutely essential to book as early as possible, especially if you are planning a trip during the peak summer months of July and August.

Exploring Ksamil beyond the beach

From the front steps of the hotel, you are perfectly positioned to experience some of the absolute best adventures in southern Albania. If you want to break up your beach days, here is how to make the most of your location:

  • The Ksamil Islands: You can hire a kayak or hop on a local speedboat directly outside the hotel to explore the uninhabited Ksamil Islands. We highly recommend packing a dry bag with some drinks and snacks for a quiet picnic on the outer Twin Islands.

Pro Tip

While paddling out to the islands was one of my absolute favourite memories, we actually made a few massive, painful mistakes during our first few days in town (including a brutal sunburn incident on the water!). To make sure you don't repeat our blunders, here are 10 Things We Regret Missing in Ksamil, Albania.

  • Snorkelling: The waters directly in front of the promenade are unbelievably clear. Bring a snorkel set with you to explore the rocky marine life and schools of little fish swimming just off the shoreline. Because the shorelines here can be quite rocky, water shoes are also an absolute lifesaver to protect your feet from sharp stones and sneaky sea urchins! I’ve mapped out these and all our other tried-and-tested gear recommendations to help you pack for your trip.

My top group boat tour pick: If you don’t want to bring snorkelling gear in your luggage, I highly recommend booking the Ksamil Pigeon Cave Snorkelling & Speedboat Tour through GetYourGuide. It departs right near the hotel lounge, costs around €37 per person, and includes free drinks and snorkelling masks. You get a fast, high-energy adrenaline ride out to see massive highlights like Mirror Beach, the hidden blue water caves at Pigeon Cave, and they even let you stay on the Twin Islands for as long as you want before picking you back up.

  • Epic day trips: Because the hotel sits in such a central transit spot, it serves as the perfect launchpad to explore the rest of the Riviera. You definitely don't want to spend your entire holiday on a single sunbed! Hi! I’m Carol, half of the duo behind Carma Adventures and the designated planner of all our trips. I’m Brazilian, a total sunshine addict, and completely in love with Indonesia (seriously, I could talk about it all day).

I’m a bit of a picky eater, but put anything sweet in front of me and I’ll never say no. When we travel, you’ll usually find me scouting out dreamy luxury stays: give me a spa, a pool, and a cosy robe and I’m in heaven.

But here’s the twist: even though I love a little indulgence, I’m also the one who’s always digging up clever travel hacks, hidden deals, and smart ways to save money without sacrificing the experience. It’s basically my superpower.
