1. Ksamil
This dreamy coastal village in southern Albania is famous for its striking turquoise waters, white-sand shores, and lively island vibes. It’s no surprise that travellers frequently call Ksamil the “Maldives of Europe.”
When Max and I stayed here, we loved spending our morning kayaking out to the nearby tiny islands and our evenings stuffing our faces with fresh seafood. Because summer is the absolute peak season, the central shores can get incredibly crowded and competitive.
Skip the generic, overpriced tourist spots in the town centre and take a short walk over to Bar Restorant Luna. It is our absolute favourite restaurant here, get the freshly caught shrimp and the insane homemade pizza right by the water at sunset.

2. Gjirokastër
Stepping into Gjirokastër pretty much feels exactly like entering a historical time capsule. This UNESCO-listed town is defined by its beautifully preserved Ottoman-era stone houses, steep cobbled streets, and dramatic mountain views.
Don't miss the Gjirokastër Castle for epic, panoramic views over the valley. It’s a refreshing break from the beach, and it's perfect if you are craving a bit of history, culture, and a slower pace of travel. Just make sure to pack sturdy shoes; those steep cobblestones are no joke!
Because regional public transport can be a bit of a guessing game, we highly recommend renting a car. 3. Theth
Located deep within the rugged peaks of the northern Albanian Alps, Theth is the ultimate go-to spot for crisp mountain air, rewarding hiking trails, and jaw-dropping nature.
If you didn't skip leg day, the famous mountain pass hike from Theth to Valbonë is widely considered one of the most spectacular day treks in Europe. Summer is the prime time to visit this region because the mountain passes are completely clear of snow, alpine wildflowers are in full bloom, and the traditional stone guesthouses are open to welcome you with hearty local food.
4. Berat
As one of Albania’s oldest continuously inhabited cities, Berat is incredibly photogenic and sits right at the top of our bucket list for our next visit.
The town is famous for its rows of white Ottoman-era houses stacked neatly up the steep hillside, creating a striking visual pattern that gives the city its nickname. It’s a great stopover between the coast and inland adventures, where you can wander ancient castle ruins and taste some of the country’s best local wine.
5. Dhërmi
If Ksamil is the wild, high-energy sibling, Dhërmi is the chilled-out, effortlessly cool cousin. Tucked into the cliffs of the Llogara Pass, this coastal gem is a favourite for travellers looking for stunning pebble beaches, dramatic cliffside views, and the sparkling Ionian Sea.
It feels a bit more spread out and relaxed than Ksamil, giving it a beautifully balanced, upscale atmosphere. Come here to spend your days lounging on sunbeds at beach clubs and your evenings sipping cold drinks right on the shore as the sun drops directly into the sea.
